If I can , I give zero stars.
Dont try to do business with this credit union.
I booked an appointment with a banking office few weeks ago at 3pm. I went there on time. When I go here, the front counter girl told me that they have changed my appointment to someone else.
They did that without asking me.
I know the bank policy(any bank) is prior to do any changes to customers appointments (date, time, person etc.) they should talk to the customer first.
But, my case, they never informed me about the change. If I knew this ahead, I would have cancelled my appointment and reschedule it.
I wasted my time for nothing. I was very upset and frustrated. Then I asked who and why the bank did that without discussing with me. They said, the banking office assigned to me is off sick. That's why they assigned me to someone else.
Why didnt they inform me before I show up? I was really mad and questioned. The front counter girl was trying to arguing and justify their decision instead of accepting their mistake/error and just apologize.
Then one Asian woman from first floor came and she yelled at me very badly.
She said, the banking officer took off at 2:45pm. My appointment was at 3:00pm. Just 15 minutes before the appointment. Didnt have time to inform me. I dont think that's true. Also, she said ,they dont do that when they want to do any changes to customers appointments and they always can do it. funny.
And further she yelled at me saying, I have to respect her staff. Rather than request a respect to her staff she should know how to respect customers and understand customer's frustration when they treat customers like this. It is serious disrespect to the customers. Before she ask me to respect them she should learn how to respect customers and how to appreciate customer's business and how to admit their errors and mistakes without arguing.
The way this woman talked to me, I decided I should close all my accounts with this bank.
When I requested to close my account right at that point, the bad woman told me that I cant close my GIS until March next year.(The day I complete one year)
Now, I have to wait with this bank until March 2026. For sure, I will close my account next day.
I was planning to bring all of my other chequing and saving accounts to this branch. Now, no, never. I dont want to.
I warn ppl, please dont go to this branch. May be credit union has no fault. But, this branch. This woman.
If someone from top management calls me, I can explain what happened. I think top management should investigate this and teach this woman how to treat customers.
Please avoid this bank/ this branch.

If I could give zero stars it would be. Tried using the front ATM on a Friday night at 9pm. ATM froze soon as I put my card in and went out of service and KEPT my debit card. Tried hitting cancel and tried calling, they aren't open past 8pm to call anybody which is ridiculous! I had to call the loss and prevention line for all credit unions since nobody was able to actually take my call that works at SCU. Having to leave my debit card there overnight, came back the next morning (Saturday) at 9:30am soon as they open and the guy at the front tells me they have someone working on it so it will take 15-20 minutes. I said no I need to get to work and I'm already late, I did not want to have to come here in the first place for this. All in all, SCU is my secondary account and I would suggest not using SCU AT ALL. Always problems with the machines and this is not the first time. I would 10000% suggest using TD right across from them. I will be cancelling my account and everything with SCU and finding a new secondary bank.

My wife and I reached out to the agent (agent was SCU employee) of a condo we were thinking of purchasing.

We didn’t hear back from this agent for 5 days.

We didn’t get the opportunity to make a deposit on the property due to not getting information in a timely manner.

I reached out to SCU Linden Ridge Mortgage department asking to speak to the manager. When speaking to the manager I stated that 5 days without a callback was unacceptable. She responded that there was a weekend. I was shocked at the response. I said what about the 2-3 days that the agent was in the office? Or aren’t your agents available on weekends? My wife and I wanted to buy a condo and we thought SCU would be there for us being our bank and the agent selling the condo.

She responded no we aren’t available on weekends. Then she replied that I had taken up 20 of her minutes of her time answering my questions. She also said agents don’t have that kind of time and we expect members to set appointments.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Took to much of her time?!!! Don’t have the time to answer my questions?!!!

This is not how you talk to members!!!

I made a complaint over the phone with no callback as of yet (3 days) so I decided to let the public know.
This isn’t even the busy time for selling/purchasing of home!

We will be reconsidering using SCU for further banking, loans or mortgages. It’s was a horrible experience on many levels with numerous people.

Our family didn’t deserve this treatment no family does, period!

BEWAREX . . . . .
In an effort to "grow" profits, they are willing to do whatever it takes, including billing you for a mortgage that they don't own. Even after they admitted that it was NOT ethical, they still kept the money . . . . My mortgage is now with another institution.

So I have a few points to touch on here. First, I have read every single Google maps review of all 3 SCU bank branches. I can relate to most of the good and bad experiences that reviewers have shared going back as far as the last 8-10 years.

Second, I've recently had an absolutely terrific experience with one of the Member Service Reps at the McGillivray branch by the name of Manilka Fernando. I came in to do a safety deposit box closeout, provide instructions for some GIC renewals, and to also ask some questions about interest rate forecasts as well as possible personal loan negotiations. Manilka was on the ball with everything that I've so far done at that branch. We even had a brief conversation about the economic forecast of North America vs the rest of the world in the coming years. This is one very intelligent and highly competent lady to work with at SCU.

Third, in regards to a majority of the negative reviews, they have a few common denominators that are easy to identify. Namely, most members that have written negative reviews are not very knowledgeable about the financial system in relation to banks as well as the pros & cons of the SCU as a bank in comparison to the "Big 6" other major banks in Canada as well as their other subsidiaries.

Fourth, anyone that understands banks should know the most important rule in banking, "Never put all of your eggs into 1 basket". There is no 1 bank/financial institution that you should do ALL of your banking with. Spread your assets/liabilities out amongst multiple institutions. Wherever the savings interest rates are the best, put your savings there. Wherever the day to day banking fees are the lowest, put your checking account there. Wherever you can get the lowest interest rates for a mortgage/loan, borrow from there. And so on and so forth.

Just like a smart individual would shop around for the best deal on a generic consumer purchase, one must also shop around among all the banks within your purview that pertain to the financial activities you wish to pursue. Food for thought.

This financial institution is the absolute worst.
The customer service level is terrible, the wait times on the phone to connect with someone are measured in hours not minutes.
I highly recommend avoiding this financial institution. I’ve never been treated so rudely by a company in my entire life . Unfortunately I am trapped with them for now but am in the process of getting myself out of this situation.

We’ve been members for years and used various services that are offered. We’ve had mixed experiences, but recently we changed various account details , had them research some dormant account details and applied for a new credit card. Manilka was super competent, efficient and friendly. My son phoned in on a separate matter the next day and spoke with her ( unbeknownst to us) and his experience was the same! Well done!

They're incredibly slow, This is in part due to how they have the computer system set up but it's also in part due to the staff that I have been experiencing. Doing in person transfers takes forever. You get through the line pretty quick.But I have yet to have an interaction where i'm not there for at least half hour. Other banks it would be a five minute in and out.
