Un beau moment d histoire..guide sympathique et bilingue

We went to the Dory Shop as one part of the three museum ticket including the Shelburne County Museum, the Ross-Thomson House & Store Museum and of course, the Dory Shop Museum. We went midweek in early August when the resident dory maker (Marie? Mary?) was on site.

We were given the option of a self tour or guided tour and chose the latter. It started with a short video about a dory maker who made over 10,000 of these work horse boats into his 90’s. Our guide, (Jim?) brought us around the first floor with a great explanation of the fishing industry and some of the economic and social history of the industry at the time. Very interesting! The tour lasted about 25 minutes with no rush and plenty of time for questions.

Following this we went up to the second floor and spoke with Mary who is building a dory there. We had a great and far ranging conversation with her about the process, being a learner of such a craft later in life, being female in this world, the tools she uses now and that would have been used then, the number of people who would have been in the room to build, and so much more.

Overall, it was a fabulous hour or so. We really enjoyed our guides and recommend that you take the guided tour (it’s included in your admission price - no extra cost).

Absolutely LOVE the Dory shop and ALL the Shelburne county museums! The Dory shop has a wonderful history and a great little tour. Strongly recommend!!
