My friend and I recently visited the Muslim Welfare Canada Food Bank in Scarborough as we are both currently unemployed and struggling with food insecurity. As members of the Black community, we were hoping for support during a difficult time but were told we would have to wait until the next intake in July — a five-month wait.

Being asked to wait that long for food assistance, a basic human need, is incredibly disappointing and unrealistic for those already facing hardship. Food insecurity doesn’t wait for intake schedules, and more flexible processes or emergency provisions would be immensely helpful.

Additionally, the behavior of the front desk staff was unprofessional and discriminatory. They displayed a poor attitude and treated us with disrespect, which made an already difficult situation even worse. We expected compassion and understanding but instead left feeling marginalized and dismissed.
I truly appreciate the work this organization does for the community, but I urge them to address issues related to both intake delays and staff conduct to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

Note/ The relevance of my comment is to help better the organization as it serves a diverse group of our communities, I appreciate the opportunity to share my views.
I recently visited your organization in Scarborough location and I painfully felt very disappointed. My partner and I walked in for emergency aid and got turned off by the service we got. The front desk staff (2 ladies) communication skills are very poor making it very unpleasant to initiate an open conversation, we were served with very little that can only last us 2 or 3 days, but the lady at the front desk(she doesn't wear glasses) addressed us in a loud voice told us that it was all they could provide until July that means 5months later, unrealistically I couldn't believe it and I was even ashamed since by now everyone was looking at us very awkwardly as if we had done something wrong to be honest I was very pained even though it was being offered help I hoped I was the one donating than being donated to.
Regardless of the situation at hand I felt that and I would bet on it that the employees at the front desk were either not educated or even though not educated they did not have the warm heart of humanity. They have no empathy or compassion as if that's not enough they laughed at us while we walked out.
I am hoping that no one else would go hoping for help and feeling turned down in a painful manner or walk away in tears like we did, unfortunately we are going through a crises where jobs opportunities are scarce, rentals unaffordable with no one to look for help please mind our comments because we believe your organization is part of a bigger network to the government where our views and comment would help them better the lives of many suffering residents in Canada.

I recommend the Muslim foodbank for everyone most especially newcomers. In this food bank you can get big laps of chicken which is Halal , good rice and other nice groceries. It is worth visiting. They are very welcoming not minding that I am a Christian.

I am deeply disappointed and disheartened by the experience I had at the Muslim Welfare Centre in Scarborough. I went there seeking assistance and support, but instead, I encountered blatant discrimination and a hostile attitude, particularly from a lady at the customer service desk.

From the moment I arrived, I felt unwelcome and judged. The lady at the desk was dismissive and rude, treating me with a lack of respect and empathy. It was clear that her behavior was not just unprofessional but discriminatory, making me feel uncomfortable and unvalued.

As a community center, the Muslim Welfare Centre should be a place of support and compassion, especially for those in need. Unfortunately, my experience was quite the opposite. I urge the management to address this issue seriously, provide proper training to their staff, and ensure that such discriminatory behavior is not tolerated. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances.

I hope that by sharing my experience, necessary changes will be made to prevent others from facing similar treatment in the future.
