I’ve been visiting and have adopted animals from here for the last 10 years. The staff are very nice, however usually very busy. It is a small space, so it can be a little chaotic when many people are visiting. Nice to be able to bring dogs out on a walk in the cul-de-sac. Always loveable pets here, sometimes there’s lots and sometimes there’s only a couple, depends on the time of year, etc.. The website is not always up-to-date so I would recommend stopping in for a visit to see who’s available.

Adopted our little fur baby Nova (previously Peaches) about a month ago now and couldn't be happier! She has settled in so well and fits our fam perfectly.

Emily at the SPCA was super helpful & patient during the adoption process, and the centre was very prompt in following up on a (very minor) issue we had a week after adopting her, even returning my call after hours. Was all-around a very straight-forward, welcoming, and easy way to adopt a pet!

If you have extra blankets or towels to donate to the SPCA, please do so. The staff were very friendly and the location was well kept and clean. I dropped in a while ago to donate some items. They’re doing a great job at the SPCA helping animals in need.

I have had nothing but amazing things to say about the SPCA. I moved to Halifax in 2013 and adopted my first two cats in 2014. Each time I went in for adoptions, I was met with high professionalism, and compassion for the animals. My beautiful cats have been living happy healthy lives in my home and I am so lucky to have them. I adopted rats through them last year, as well as a male semi-feral kitten in December. Every experience I had through them was kind, compassionate and knowledgeable. It takes sincerely hard working people with strong hearts to be in this career. It is not an easy job, as they see the worst cases of animals come in and they have to make the toughest decisions for the quality of life of animals. I have to say my sincere thank you to these hardworking and compassionate individuals who go to work every day, working hard for the animals and being the voice for them. ♥️

We love going in and offering some love to all the animals pending. Make sure to sign in and follow the rules, a great way to kill an hour or two when you wanna offer some love.

I got my cat Bean from the SPCA on April 16th. I adopted him aware that he had a respiratory infection in the past, however, was assured he was in perfect health currently. After 38 days of having him, I came home from work one day, and he had one pupil severely dilated, and the other normal. I called the vet and took him immediately in and was told that he has high blood pressure and glaucoma, which could potentially cause blindness or result in the loss of the eye. When I contacted the SPCA and told them of this issue, they told me that my options were either to surrender them to him, get my $300 adoption fee back, or come in and surrender him and get a new cat. They told me it’s not their responsibility anymore to care for him and that it’s not their fault I cant not afford to pay for his vet bills. ( the initial visit was 600$ and he will need eye drops for the rest of his life twice a day. He will also likely be blind in that eye and need it removed which would be thousands of dollars in vet care. He is also now clearly sick and not his happy self). They told me they can legally only help pets in their care if they’re surrendered, and that even if he went back for adoption they could not hold him for me to adopt him back (a nice way of saying they will likely be putting him down). I asked if I could bring him in to them so their vet could see him and at least tell me what is wrong with him so I can plan to care for him and they told me that is not possible and he’s not their responsibility. I have had him again for 38 DAYS. Bean is a sweet cat and I love him very much and do not wish to give him up. He was clearly not healthy when I adopted him and they refuse to take any responsibility for their negligence. I am so disappointed in this organization that I have previously loved and supported. I will never be associating with them again and hope that others look for alternatives in animal care because they are not always keeping the animals in their best interests.
