Elms company parked a Mack dump truck next to a playground and left it running and unattended for over 50 minutes. It was in a legitimate parking spot and there was no construction happening in the immediate vicinity.

December 13, 2024. Temp was -2 C. Daylight hours (starting at 2:11 pm).

They apparently refused to turn off the truck when asked to by the developer because they claim/believe that you can't turn off diesels.

I actually really, really want to know the rational/thinking behind this belief. I have been unable to find any evidence-based references for it, but I don't know the best places to look for engineering-type documents.

For example, if it has turbo, yes, it should have 10 seconds of idling before you turn it off (max 3 minutes if it is really hot). After a heavy pull, diesels might need a cooldown period but unloaded and driving on Edmonton streets is presumably not a heavy pull.

If you can provide a legitimate rationale, I would greatly appreciate it (e.g.from the vehicle's user manual, a recent textbook for training heavy equipment mechanics, a recent technical or scientific publication).

Your vehicle was a 2013 Mack dump truck. I was able to open and slam the cab door at least 3 times without any workers noticing, so children would definitely be able to get in the truck unnoticed.

Had Elms install weeping tiles, sump, and window wells for me. Spent a lot of money on it. They incorrectly mounted the window wells, as they set them on the ground which was newly backfilled, the window wells of course collapsed when the ground settled. Messaged Trevor to come and fix them and he said that it was done at the end of last year so it’s too late and that a final grade would’ve prevented it. The correct way to install window wells is to attach them to the foundation. They damaged the vinyl on the side of my house, wrecked my down spouts, they busted a window (which took them six months to have repaired). They ripped off an intake vent for my furnace, came to fix it and replaced it with an exhaust vent (which has a flap that prevents it from sucking in new air, they eventually came and fixed it), destroyed my bird bath in the backyard and didn’t say anything about it, broke a fence post, took a few swipes off the sod on the side of my house when they were supposedly grading, they didnt backfill around the house properly so it’s sunk in massively even though they’d left massive piles of dirt up to it. They brought a lot of dirt to my yard while they were working, I asked them what it was for and they told me that it was for the grading, turns out they were dumping fill on my yard, I’ve pulled 15 yards out of my 1,000 sq ft backyard just to get to where the grass used to be. Their version of a rough grade was just embarrassing, other contractors I had around looked at the work of Elm’s and laughed at how bad it is. I asked Trevor Elms if they’re going to stand behind their work, and he blocked me, so I guess that answers that question.

The boss asked to see my phone at work one day, seen this was the last page he visited on my phone, left a review for his OWN company on MY account. His self-review: "Elms weeping till did an excellent job for beginning to end . The office and management we simple and easy to deal with. I would recommend the company to anybody building a house. Well done !"

Think twice about taking a cheaper option, read the other reviews, find a different company to work for / contract.

I’m giving this company a one for professionalism. I was driving behind one of their delivery trucks with a load on and turning off Anthony Henday onto 17st. A sheet of pink insulation blew off the truck and onto by front windshield cause me to swerve and almost go off the road and causing the car behind me to swerve as well. I call theBC number on the truck to report it and this guy Neil from BC answered the call. He wasn’t too interested in carrying on with the conversation and didn’t show he cared what happened, just wanted to get off the phone. It an Edmonton base company with a BC number advertised on the truck. If it’s a company in Alberta it should be displaying an Alberta number. I found the number for here in Edmonton and talked to a lady there in the office and she said she will pass it on and have someone to call me but I don’t expect a call concerning how Neil was on the phone.

We bought a house about 5 years ago and soon after discovered leaks in two corners of the basement. Elms (who BTW had nothing to do with the original basement and weeping tile) came and facilitated a repair whereby both corners were hydro-vacked and sealed with a rubber membrane. The cost was very reasonable. One corner has been good since. The other was much tougher to cure and Elms were required to come back a few times to try different methods of repair. Trevor the owner knows all the tricks and finally I believe he had fixed our issue. Of all this the most amazing thing was we’re never been charged anything after the first repair ... amazing. This is service that goes beyond anything you see these days and there is no business I have ever encountered that stands behind their work like these guys. Need basement or weeping tile work done? This is the only call you need to make ... period. BTW they also do Radon testing and remediation.
