I turned to Windmill Microlending during a critical time in my career transition while enrolled in a MELT truck training program. I believed their mission was to support newcomers and professionals facing financial barriers. After weeks of providing extensive documentation, attending interviews, and undergoing hard credit checks that affected my credit score, my application for a modest $10,000 loan was denied due to 'credit risk.'

Ironically, my bank increased my credit limit without me even asking, signaling confidence in my financial profile. Yet Windmill, an organization operating on donations, chose to prioritize 'low-risk' candidates who already have high credit scores, stable incomes, and minimal expenses. This raises an important question: Is their purpose truly to help people in financial stress, or is it to ensure they face zero financial risk while generating interest income on donor-funded capital?

Instead of meaningful support, I was offered financial literacy classes. While education is valuable, it felt like a diversion from their inability—or unwillingness—to deliver on their core mission. Windmill presents itself as a bridge for newcomers facing financial obstacles, but in reality, it seems they operate like a traditional bank under a non-profit banner, with the safety net of donor funds cushioning their operations.

To donors considering supporting Windmill: I encourage you to ask how many applicants in genuine financial need are being turned away because they don't meet overly cautious lending criteria. My experience suggests that Windmill is more focused on safeguarding their financial position than taking calculated risks to fulfill their mission of empowering vulnerable individuals.

Please stop sending me emails asking for donations. I’m always willing to support meaningful causes, as I’ve done in the past when I was in a better financial situation, but I don’t believe donations here are reaching the people who truly need them. I speak from personal experience.
